About
This course looks at morality from the perspective of our minds. Are we born with some sort of moral compass, or is morality purely cultural and learnt? How do we judge what is good or bad? Which parts of our brain are wired for morality? Are good people capable of doing truly horrible things? What makes one a hero? If you are wondering what is the science behind good an evil, this course is for you. Here is what we will look at:
Morality - the beginnings. What are our natural moral inclinations? What kind of morality are we born with? Do babies understand good and evil?
Morality - evolutionary perspective. What kind of environment did we use to live in, and how this might have shaped our moral instincts? What is our moral legacy?
Moral decision-making. How do we make tough moral decisions? What principles are guiding us when we need to make a difficult decision, and what rules of thumb do we use?
Morality - failed delivery. Are some people born bad? If so, who are they and how much can they be taken responsible for their actions? Can they be taught to be moral?
Morality hard-wired. Which parts of our brains deal with morality? How does morality look like in the brain?
Morality - hero or villain. What circumstances make good people do terrible things? When do we succumb to evil and how hard is it to resist? What does it take to be a hero?"
